Our rabbi, Jay Shupack loves the diversity of the Jewish Community of Central Oregon. We come from incredibly varied backgrounds, sharing our love of Judaism, community and the natural beauty surrounding us. Jay grew up in Pennsylvania in an Orthodox home and attended ten years of Yeshiva Day School. For five years, he lived and studied in Israel. He earned his smicha from the Va'ad Harabanim (the Board of Rabbis). He has previously held positions as cantor for Chabad for four years from 1995 to 1999 and spent time as rabbinical pastor for the Seacrest Village Retirement Home in San Diego before moving to Bend in 2000.
When Jay arrived, we were in the basement of the Methodist Church and he helped the community through the process of purchasing our present home of Shalom Bayit at the corner of Ward Road and Modoc Lane (see directions). He sheparded us as we grew from 65 families to over 100. Our services have a traditional feel with nontraditional content. Rabbi Jay makes the services inclusive in that he leads the services but everyone that wants to participate has a part. We have respect for all branches and pathways of Judaism. Jay is married to Judy, head of Jewish education and ha three grown children, Josh, Joel and Jamina.
